Economics Visiting Faculty Required

The School of Economics, University of the Punjab, is the oldest seat of Economics in the country, having completed its Centennial in 2019. The school offers Bachelors, Masters, MPhil and PhD degrees as well as Diploma in Economics, Business Economics, and Applied Economics.

The School of Economics is seeking high quality visiting faculty for all its programs to teach the following courses:

Accounting Islamiyat / Ethics Language in Use (English)

Investment Analysis International Relations Business Law
Money, Banking, & Finance Energy Economics Political Economy
Production Analysis Development Policy Development Economics
Calculus I & II Major Issues in Pakistan Economy

The visiting faculty shall be responsible for conducting and teaching courses, of 18 weeks duration, within the prescribed curriculum for students enrolled at the Department, as well as compiling, administering and grading examinations.

A candidate must have PhD / MPhil or equivalent qualification from an HEC recognized institution, with at least 2 years of teaching experience. Candidates possessing PhD degree will be preferred.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed, S.I. emphasized the role of economists, specifically the Department of Economics, in transforming the Pakistan society. He also lauded the leadership of Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Anwar Ch. in transforming the Department of Economics into a school of Economics and enhancing its role in policy formulation.

He was addressing the alumni reunion of the Economics Department for batches from 1986 – 1991, arranged by the alumni at the University of the Punjab. The gathering was attended by Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed, S.I, Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Saleem Mazhar, Chairman Department of Economics Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Anwar Ch. In attendance were previous chairpersons Prof. Dr. A. R. Chaudhry, Prof. Dr. Abdur Rauf Butt, Prof. Dr. Hafeez ur Rehman, the faculty members, as well as large number of alumni from those years.

Later, the alumni visited the department and relived their days at the Department.

The Vice Chancellor, University of the Punjab, Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed, reiterated his stance of upgrading the infrastructure of the University during the meeting of the steering committee for the new building of the School of Economics was held at the Committee room of the Vice Chancellor office. He stated that land and finances would not be a constraint for the new building, and the building design shall reflect the new vision of the University.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed, S.I presided over the meeting which was also attended by Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood, Dean, Faculty of Econonmics and Management Sciences, Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Anwar Ch., Chairman Department of Economics, Prof. Dr. Hafiz Anwaar Asghar, Director P&D, Fayyaz Sipra, Chief Engineer, along with all members of the committee. During the meeting, the consultants presented an initial proposal, to initiate the discussion on requirement specifications for the new building.

The financial and technical bids for the new building have already been finalized.

The foundations of the Department of Economics at University of the Punjab were laid in 1919 when a desk to study economics was established. 2019 marks 100 years of Economics research and study at the University of the Punjab. To mark this glorious journey, centennial celebrations were formally marked by a ceremony held on November 9, 2019 at Syed Pervez Hassan Environmental Law Center auditorium.

Vice Chancellor, University of the Punjab, Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed, S.I. was the chief guest. The even was largely attended by Deans, Directors, Chairpersons, alumni and students.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor commended the contributions of the Economics department to the society and the university. He reiterated his commitment to support up-gradation of the department into a School of Economics.

Earlier, the Chairman of the department, Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Anwar, highlighted the contributions of the department and its glorious journey spanning over a century. He lauded the efforts of previous faculty and academic leadership, as well as those of the current faculty and staff.

Three notable economists. Dr. Rashid Amjad (Director, Graduate Institute of Development Studies, LSE), Dr. Abid Aman Burki (Professor of Economics at LUMS), and Dr. Azhar Hassan Nadeem (Senior Fellow LSE) presented their views on the current state of Pakistan’s economy and way forward.

Prof. Rodney Wilson explained the issues related to Islamic Finance, and delineated upon various aspects related to the Islamic Financial Industry. Using his vast experience in the filed, he elaborated on various regulatory issues while linking it with non-Islamic Finance.

The discussion was followed by an interactive question answer session, where the audience and Professor Wilson shared ideas, opinions, and elaborated on various ramifications of the ideas presented in the lecture.

Prof. Dr. Mubbsher Munawar Khan thanked the distinguished guest for his visit to the University and for delivering the lecture. At the end, the distinguished guest was presented a Punjab University shield as a token of appreciation.

The Department of Economics, in collaboration with the Punjab University Directorate of External Linkages, organized a lecture on Knowledge Economy, delivered by Professor David Rooney, Professor of Management and Organization Studies at the Macquarie university, Sydney, Australia. Professor Dr. Nasira Jabeen, Dean, Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, Prof. Dr. Kanwal Amin, Director External Linkages, Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Anwar, Chairman Department of Economics, Faculty from University of the Punjab’s Department of Economics, Institute of Business Administration, Department of Information Management, students, as well as faculty members from the University of Lahore, Minhaj University, and members of civil society attended the lecture. Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Anwar welcomed the guest to University of the Punjab.

Prof. Rooney distinguished knowledge from wisdom, and drew upon his research to establish the social and structural differences between developed economies and less developed economies. He emphasized on the differences in social organization, whereby the developed economies – mostly in the north western part of the world – have a more individualistic social structure, while the less developed societies – mostly in the global south – boast a more collective social fabric. In his opinion, this difference is social structure has profound impact on knowledge sharing, in turn effecting possible modes of development and economic growth. Entrepreneurship and innovation are affected most significantly, and the knowledge sharing structure has deep implications on the future avenues of growth.

The discussion was followed by an interactive question answer session, where the audience and Professor Rooney shared ideas, opinions, and elaborated on various ramifications of the ideas presented in the lecture.

The lecture started with recitation from the Holy Quarn. Mrs. Dr. Kalsoom Zulfiqar incharge department of Economics welcomed and thanked the chief guest and participants and provided brief overview about the departmental programs and objectives of the research seminar series. Prof. Dr. Abdul Salam introduced the chief guest and provided brief overview of his professional achievements.
Dr. Nadeem highlighted the resources of Pakistan and its potential to be among the top countries in the world particularly in Asia. He also threw light on the current state of affairs in Pakistan. He offered various options to emerge from the current mess and realise the potential of the country. He specially stressed the need for investment in human resources and lamented the failure of Pakistani economists to provide proper policy frameworks. The lecture generated animated discussion from the participants who asked Dr. Nadeem ul Haque several probing questions to which he cheerfully replied.
Prof. Dr. Nasira Jabeen thanked Dr. Nadeem ul Haque for his wonderful talk and discussion and presented him a departmental souvenir as a token of appreciation.

On 21st December 2017, Department of Economics organized a seminar on “Winning strategy for developing Economies”. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Masood Khalid, Dean, School of Business and Economics, University of Brunei Darussalam was the guest speaker for the seminar.
The event started with the recitation of the Holy Quran. After the National Anthem, Mrs. Kalsoom Zulfiqar formally welcomed the distinguished guest and provided a brief introduction about his research and other academic career. Prof. Dr. Ahmed was then requested to share his observations on the discussion topic, in which he elaborated the historical aspects and the current situations on to what strategy the developing countries should stick to in order to have great success. The case of Pakistan was specifically highlighted. The session went well as with such informative talk, the audiences took a lot of interest and participated with very productive questions. Prof. Dr. Abdul Salam delivered the concluding remarks and praised the guest speaker for his expert opinion and knowledge sharing and ensured such inspiring seminars to be conducted in future. Mrs. Kalsoom Zufiqar Incharge Department of Economics presented an honorary shield to the honorable guest Prof. Dr. Ahmed Masood Khalid and the session ended with all participants joining the guest over a cup of tea.
